Make the Switch

Bottled water; the mainstay of the soccer sidelines, walking trails and school lunch bags. Do you really know what it costs? For as much as $2.50 a liter, or $10 per gallon, bottled water costs more than gasoline. For one household serviced by Bucks County Water & Sewer Authority the cost of water is $.0059 per gallon. And it is not just the cost to the family budget…

The Container Recycling Institute estimates that 86% of the disposable plastic water bottles do not get recycled but end up in the landfills or littered along our roads and in community parks. The problem is growing for the environment and the landfills. In 1995, the amount of PET (the plastic used to make water bottles) in landfills was 1,175 million pounds. By 2005, this tripled to 3,900 million pounds; almost 2 million tons. And it is not just the cost to the landfills and the parks…

Fossil fuels are used to manufacture water bottles. According to the Earth Policy Institute in 2006, making bottles to meet America's demand for bottled water requires more than 17 million barrels of oil annually - enough to fuel 1 million US cars for a year! The Natural Resources Defense Council reports that the release of greenhouse gases in the manufacturing, transporting and disposing of plastic water bottles contributes to global warming and is filling the nation's landfills.

Each person and each family can help solve this problem. Simply cut down on your use of bottled water and always recycle the bottles when bottled water is your only option. This fall, the Parks & Recreation Department will be adding recycle containers to the parks. Please use them. In 2009, water fountains will be installed in locations where they can be protected from vandals. Park users are encouraged to bring refillable water bottles from home. For a little less convenience, you can save money, oil and the environment.

Beechwood & LCPL Harry J. Simmons Jr. Memorial Park Master Site Plan Project

Middletown Township was awarded a grant from the PA Department of Conservation & Natural Resources to create master site plans for Beechwood Park & LCPL Harry J. Simmons, Jr. Memorial Park (formerly Veterans Park.) The process of creating master site plans is to give the community the opportunity to examine a park in great detail & create a future vision for the park that improves its appearance, its value to the neighborhood & its functionality. The Board of Supervisors appointed Schoor DePalma Engineers as the project consultants. A study committee, comprised of residents who live near each of the parks & park user groups, met with the consultant several times during the planning process to identify the issues & attributes of each location. An environmental study of both parks was completed & public input was received by holding public meetings & interviewing key people in the community about the parks.

Listed below are links to additional information regarding this important project. Any questions regarding this project can be directed to the Parks & Recreation Department.
