Trash Collection

Residential trash is collected on Mondays and Thursdays north of Route 1 (Superhighway) and Tuesdays and Fridays south of Route 1 (Superhighway) except for New Years Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Residents should place trash at the curb after 6:00 p.m. the night preceding collection; remove empty cans by 10:00 a.m. the day following collection. Trash must be placed in a suitable container, which has a tight-fitting cover and handles, is watertight, and is animal proof. Containers shall be no larger than 35 gallons in capacity and weigh less than 50 pounds when full. All boxes and carpets must be bundled in less than four (4) foot lengths. A maximum of 10 containers, bags, or bundles of trash will be collected each collection day.

Refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, air conditioners, and any other appliances containing freon are collected by appointment only. Doors must be removed. To schedule a pickup, call Waste Management at 215-788-5555. All other bulk items, such as furniture and appliances, are collected on the 2nd collection day of each week by a separate collection crew. Bulk items are limited to one item per week.

Latex (water-based) paint may be placed in the trash for regular collection. Please allow the unused paint to harden to prevent it from spilling onto the street during collection.

The hauler is not responsible for the removal of building materials in excess of one container per week, automobiles, automobile parts, tree stumps, demolition materials, concrete, dirt, tires, and household hazardous waste. Each homeowner is responsible for the proper disposal of these items.

Holidays

When the holidays noted above fall on a trash day, trash will be collected on the next scheduled collection day. Instead of a 10-container limit, there is a 20-container limit. When a holiday falls on a recycling day, recyclables will be collected the next day. When a holiday falls on a yard waste day, yard waste will be collected the next workday.

Recycling Collection

Middletown Township has established a mandatory recycling program for the curbside collection of newspaper and magazines (including phone books and catalogs), glass bottles and jars (all colors), food and beverage cans (aluminum, tin, and bimetal), and plastic bottles and jars coded 1 or 2 in the recycling logo located on the bottom of the container.

All bottles and cans are to be mixed together in one container; newspapers and magazines are to be bundled separately in brown paper bags (no plastic bags) or tied with twine and placed next to the recycling container at the curb. Residents are encouraged to use a green container for recycling bottles and cans. Such containers are available commercially or can be purchased at the Municipal Center. The Township's fee for a container is $9.00. Lids are also available for an additional $3.00. All containers must be labeled for recycling. Recycling stickers are available free of charge at the Municipal Center. There is no limit on the amount of recyclables collected

Residents can now recycle cardboard through the curbside recycling program. Both corrugated and pressed cardboard (cereal boxes, soda cases, etc.) are included. Residents should place the cardboard in a brown paper bag just as you would newspaper. Newspaper and cardboard can also be placed together in the same bag. Additionally, boxes can be broken down and bundled into a size comparable to a shopping bag in preparation for pick-up. The cardboard is to be placed curbside along with other recyclables on your regular recyclable collection day.

Please place recyclables apart from the trash at the curb. Do not place the recyclables in the street. Collections may occur as early as 6:00 a.m., so please place recyclables at the curb after 6:00 p.m. on the night preceding collection.

Recyclable materials are collected on Mondays for those residents north of Route 1 (Superhighway) and Tuesdays for those residents south of Route 1 (Superhighway).

Middletown is proud to partner with Waste Management to increase recycling and help preserve the environment.

Yard Waste Collection

Middletown has established a yard waste curbside collection program effective the 3rd Wednesday of April through the second Wednesday of December each year. Permissible items to be picked up include yard waste clippings, leaves, plants, twigs, and tree branches. This material will be collected and processed at a composting facility, thereby reducing the amount of solid waste disposed of at a landfill or incinerator.

Residents are to place their yard waste in either 30-gallon biodegradable paper bags or in regular trash containers. Residents may not use cardboard boxes, plastic bags, or biodegradable plastic bags, as these will not be accepted at the composting facility. Tree branches are to be bundled into 4-foot lengths and placed next to the yard waste at the curb. Do not rake leaves into the street. Collection may occur as early as 6:00 a.m., so residents are advised to place their yard waste at the curb on Tuesday evening after 6:00 p.m. There is no limit to the amount of yard waste collected each Wednesday.

Household Hazardous Waste

Items that fall under the category of hazardous waste are not to be put out for curbside pick-up. In addition to being pollutants that can infiltrate and contaminate our water resources, they can mix together in an enclosed area such as a trash truck or dumpster, and become a deadly chemical or fire hazard. Hazardous waste items need special attention and are to be disposed of at special drop-off locations.

Bucks County conducts periodic Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days for the disposal of motor oil, oil based paints, pool chemicals, pesticides, batteries, and other hazardous materials. Old computers are also included in the Household Hazardous Waste Collection program. Please check this web site or the Township's Government Access Cable Channel 22 for the exact dates. Notices regarding this program will be posted on the home page.

Request for Public Records

All written requests will be reviewed by the Assistant Township Manager and will be responded to in a manner consistent with Act 100 of 2002, the Open Records Law. An estimate of any fees involved will be provided by the Community Services office at the time the written request for public records is received.
